We at UMB are excited that November is upon us and we remain positive that we will end this year, 2020 on a great note.

Many exciting things happened over the last month and I crave your indulgence to recap some of the highlights. We joined millions around the world to celebrate the Global Customer Service Week. And on this note, on my own behalf and that of Management and staff of UMB, we want to once again say thank you for your continued support of our business. October also marked a significant period in the health calendar of the world as millions, including our staff commemorated Pink October to bring awareness to the fight against breast cancer. In line with our meticulous approach to deploying capital, controlling operating costs and risks in the business, we recently published our Third Quarter Financials, which saw an earning of GHs22.3million, representing a growth of 156% year-on-year basis. In spite of the global economic challenges, our impressive financial performance is partly attributed to the loyalty and trust that you have reposed in us as your preferred banking partner and for that we say thank you.

As the holiday season fast approaches, UMB understands the financial burden this season may bring. To recap the activities of the past month, I am happy to share that we successfully held our 45th Annual General Meeting (AGM) with our Shareholders, to discuss our performance in the 2019 financial year, realign our business strategies and consolidate our gains by prioritizing your business needs. I wish to extend my warmest welcome to you for the month of August. The significance of this month on our nation’s calendar is not lost on us as a truly indigenous bank.  It is a time for us to reflect on the sacrifices of our founding fathers and for us strive to emulate their deeds to build this nation for posterity. So in the famous words of John F. Kennedy, “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”.

Moving on, UMB as a customer-centric bank is always looking for better ways to provide you, our cherished customer, with superior products and services that are relevant and delight your banking experience. That said, we are continually improving our infrastructure and procedures to ensure efficiency in our service delivery to you.

The spread of coronavirus continues to adversely impact the operations of several businesses. Consequently, UMB’s total operating income declined by 6.5% year-on-year to GHS115.8m as at Half Year 2020. However, our unique operational efficiency strategies resulted in a 10.4% reduction in expenses, year-on-year. In effect, our Bank recorded a Profit After Tax of GHS16m, which represented a growth of 194% on a year-on-year basis. Customer deposits also increased by 31% year-on-year to GHS2.2bn while our Assets also trended upwards by 25% year-on-year to GHS3.3bn. These positive key indicators attest to the fact that UMB is a resilient bank even in the face of eventualities occasioned by a crisis.

As the world transitions to the new normal during this coronavirus pandemic, we continue to focus on serving you better by ensuring that you have access to safe and convenient banking during this period. For that reason, we encourage the use of our digital channels such as the UMB SpeedApp, ATMs and internet banking for all banking needs. I welcome you to another month that marks the beginning of the third quarter in our financial calendar as well as Ghana’s Republic Day commemoration on July 1st. On this day, I wish every Ghanaian a happy Republic Day and I salute our gallant forefathers who sacrificed to ensure that posterity could enjoy our current sovereignty.
