Message from the CEO

December 7, 2017

Dear Business Partner,

December brings an end to a memorable 2017! Universal Merchant Bank is well placed to continue investing in Ghana and other growing markets, and I am looking forward to the challenges that the evolving banking terrain will bring in 2018 and beyond.

Looking back over 2017, our 45th Anniversary year, I have particularly been pleased to observe the enthusiasm, vivacity and energy with which you participated in all of our anniversary events – we are forever grateful. This year saw the development of new products and services as well as top-of-the-line software to streamline our internal business processes to serve you better and improve our turn-around-time. Of particular note is our cutting-edge digital product, which we will announce soon, the introduction of our specialized UMB Centre for Businesses to cater for the peculiar needs of Small and Medium-scale Enterprises and our remarkable branch expansion projects spread across the country: each of which broke new ground in terms of combining innovative ideas, business and brand proximity, brand appeal, cutting-edge technology and best in-built software design, all in an effort to making our financial services efficiently delivered to our business partners.

We started 2017 by welcoming our New Government to office under the leadership of His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with a bold announcement on the creation of liquidity space for an amount of up to 100 million United States Dollars to support the government’s One District, One Factory Flagship Initiative. This is a Public – Private Partnership (PPP) project which is being implemented through UMB’s PPP Incubator Centre, located at the UMB Centre for Businesses in Madina, Accra.

The upgrade and add-ons to our software range now positions us as one of the most technology-driven indigenous banks and I can assure you, we are not done yet. We remain committed to bringing you relevant and customized products and services that make a significant contribution to your personal and business lives.

Our Tarkwa branch relocation will link us more tightly with the people in Tarkwa, and the opening of a new ultra-modern branch in Sunyani this month, will give us the opportunity to staff the branch with highly qualified and talented personnel ready to attract and retain new customers. In the beginning of the year we welcomed Mr. Kevin Cain, a seasoned banker and small and medium enterprise (SME) development expert as the Director of Consumer and Business Banking. Mr. Cain was instrumental in the strategic development and implementation of our Centre for Businesses. We anticipate adding to our diverse team in 2018.

In association with Achimota Golf Club, the UMB Accra Open 2017 will come off from December 7-10 at the Achimota Golf Club with professional golfers from Ghana and other neighbouring countries participating in this celebrated annual sporting event. And then, we will crown it all with a solemn Carols Night to draw the curtains on what has been a challenging but successful year in the life of our bank.

On behalf of the UMB family, I want to thank you for the support this year and as we celebrate the successes of 2017 we are keen to build on them for 2018 and beyond. I look forward with great anticipation to extracting the opportunities that 2018 offers and to meeting and working seamlessly with friends and customers old and new. Merry Christmas, everyone!
