Message from the CEO

Dear Business Partner,

Welcome to a new month! As always, all workers start the month of May with that much needed one-day break to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions made by the labour force. I was honored to celebrate May Day by co-hosting TV3’s NewDay with Saham Insurance, Managing Director, Mabel Porbley. It was a wonderful experience and you can click here to see the footage.

UMB ended last month on a positive note as the financial magazine, The European, for the second consecutive year, named UMB as the Best Corporate Bank of the Year in Ghana for exceptional achievement in corporate banking.  Our long history and deeply rooted presence in this market segment make us the right business partner for many corporate entities in Ghana. I take this opportunity to dedicate the award to our loyal corporate clients and our hard working staff for consistently exceeding the expectations of our clients.

Last month, I was accompanied by a high-level three-member management team to honour an invitation from the UK Ghana Chamber of Commerce to join other notable subject matter experts on the Trade and Industrialisation panel at the 2018 UK Ghana Investment Summit in London. The Summit was attended by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo along with a number of government officials and other interested parties from the business community. To the business people that we engaged with while in London, we look forward to being your partner as you take advantage of all that UMB has to offer.

We recently partnered with the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) to help launch their Business Incubator Centre. Created in collaboration with incubator partners Century Incubator, MBC Africa, E4Impact and Women’s World Banking, the Business Incubator Centre will assist motivated young professionals to generate and develop business ideas into viable business enterprises. I am personally happy about UMB’s role in our association with UPSA’s Business Incubator Centre and I was honored to be appointed to the Council of E4Impact in connection with our commitment to innovation.

At UMB, we have a long-standing history of nurturing businesses and this is most recently demonstrated by our UMB Centre for Businesses model, an independent centre to handle the unique banking needs of our SME clients. To build on our commitment to the SME sector in Ghana, in the coming weeks, we will be organizing a series of SME Clinics in Madina, Kasoa and Kumasi for our SME clients. I can confidently say that we are the only indigenous bank with such a holistic approach to SME banking in Ghana.

Universal Merchant Bank in association with the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) launched their Business Incubator Centre on Friday, April 27. The Business Incubator Centre, created in collaboration with incubator partners Century Incubator, MBC Africa, E4Impact and Women’s World Banking, will support motivated young professionals to generate and develop business ideas into sustainable businesses.

CEO of UMB, John Awuah, said students who would avail themselves to the facility must work diligently; and be extremely cautious when they want to diversify in their businesses, especially when they attain some level of success as start-ups. Mr. Awuah noted that as a Banker, he sees first hand business ideas that fail for one reason or the other, and was therefore hopeful that the Centre would address many of these reasons for failure.

“I am personally excited of the role UMB will play in supporting and assisting students who decide to take advantage of the initiative”, he added. Mr. John Awuah was appointed to the Council of E4Impact in connection with this initiative.
